Wondering What To Bring To Montana?
Are you planning your Montana mountain vacation getaway and wondering what to bring? Well, we have a list ready for you with tips and ideas. So, whether you’re a veteran hiker or just looking to chill out and relax in a cozy cabin, we have suggestions to make your trip easy. And, some of our property rentals have a lot of little extras or amenities for guest use. For example, most of our properties already have Bear Spray. So there, you can now take one thing off your list, right? Some of our units have day packs, or backpacks and hiking poles.
Of course, what’s so great about staying at a Whitefish Glacier Vacations Property? You can call Teryn or email her (Hello@WhitefishGlacier.com) and she can immediately tell you what the extra amenities are. Teryn prides herself on giving great service to our guests. So, you’re in good hands.
Remember, Montana offers a perfect vacation away from the hustle and bustle of work. So, to ensure you have an enjoyable & relaxing trip, here’s a comprehensive packing list to help make your planning easier:
Clothing To bring to Montana
Layered Clothing – This is for varying temperatures. Even in the summer, if you ride the chairlift to the top of Whitefish Mountain, it could get a little chilly. Especially in the late afternoon orn if the wind kicks up, the temps drop. You can always throw it in a backpack. Trust us, it’s better to have it and use versus, wanting it and it’s not there. Summer Whitefish weather ranges from highs in the upper 70’s or lower 80’s (it can be warmer in late summer) with lows in the 50’s. Winter weather can be in the teens to upper 20’s during the day.
Mind you, this is Montana so it can get more extreme than this so check your forecasts before you come and always check it before you head out on your adventures while you’re here.
(Side Tip: If you’re staying in the Park or visiting the Northern Lights can pop into a forecast. We highly suggest you download an app to alert you of any activity that pops into a nightly forecast. Lake McDonald is a great place to see it if you’re staying inside Glacier National Park)
Waterproof jacket and pants – First, always, always, always check the weather forecast. If you’re out and about for a short hike or bike, you may be okay.
Hiking boots or sturdy shoes – Oh, we can’t stress this topic enough if you’re out for serious hiking. If you’re looking to take the Danny On Trail or flat trails, you might be okay but, we take hiking poles then. In fact, you may appreciate them if you get tired easily or are prone to mis-stepping a bit. Of course, boots are always better but watch for areas of dirt and gravel where you can slip. There are great guides like All Trails or Glacier National Park’s website. Here, you’ll find reviews, trail conditions, elevations and details that will help you decide what to bring and where to go.
Warm hat, gloves, and scarf – You bet, you’ll need these especially if you’re up early. The mornings can be a bit brisk if you’re taking an early morning hike (don’t forget the bear spray too). Plus, you can always throw these into a pocket if you aren’t using them.
Comfortable socks – Of course, good sock choices go hand in hand with good boots if you’re hiking. And, we have plenty of shops in town or in West Glacier if you need to pick up a better pair.
Swimsuit (for hot tubs or lakes). Yes, you’ll definitely need to enjoy the hot tubs. These properties are on Whitefish Mountain and all have hot tubs: Alpine Trail Chalet, Moose Trail Chalet, Marmot Trail Chalet & Glacier Bear Condo. In or near downtown Whitefish, these properties have hot tubs: Lynx Run Townhome and Caribou Run Chalet. If you stay at West Glacier Cabin or West Glacier Vista, you’ll have access to Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park. Think ahead, if it’s 90+ degrees, you may want to take a dip!
Gear and Equipment
Backpack – If you’re a hardcore hiker, you probably want to bring your own top notched backpack. If you plan on shorter hikes or just a few hours, go with whatever pack is most comfortable for you.
Hiking poles – Remember, where you go, you must come back. Too many trips or falls happen on the way back or downhill. Of course, you’re tired and focused on your big hiking accomplishment. You still need to be careful. Hiking poles give you added stability. So, please take them.
Ski Equipment – If you don’t have your own equipment, we have plenty of options for your ski or snowboarding rentals. Sportsman Ski Haus, Black Tie Ski Rental & Delivery or Whitefish Mountain Village has rental equipment to make your ski getaway perfect!
Water bottle or hydration pack – Water is a must on any hike. Whether you have a bladder for your pack or you bring your own bottle, make sure you have enough. Do not wait to get thirsty before you drink. Drink as you go! And, please make sure you bring plenty for the length of time you’re hiking. If you need a new pack or water bottle, many of our stores carry a great selection.
Map and compass (or GPS device) – if you’re going out for serious hiking, make sure you have your guides and a gps! ‘Enough said?? Good!
Headlamp or flashlight – Are you starting later in the day or taking an extra long hike? In case you run into a situation or delay, you may find yourself needing these. Your phone light isn’t strong enough to see the trails further out.
Sunglasses and sunscreen – You’re higher in elevation so, guess what? Of course, you’re closer to the sun. So, for every 1000′ of elevation gain, ultraviolet rays increase by 6%. Remember, in the morning, the most sun will be east and southeast, when it’s the coolest. Bring hats and also watch the back of your neck too. many people forget that area.
Camera or smartphone for capturing memories – Of course we want you to take photos. We love seeing you share photos with us. But, one thing we suggest too: Put the phone down and embrace what is in front of you, those you are with and the feelings. Let technology take a back seat while you’re here. Photos are nice to look at when you’re home but when you experience Montana, you will always have a feeling that goes with it. And, that will come back to you again and again.
Food and Snacks
Trail mix, energy bars, and snacks – munchies are good to take on hikes but be BEAR aware of your surrounding.
Lightweight, easy-to-prepare meals – if you’re heading out for a long hike, take your food with you. And, there are great places that will make some great sandwiches to take on the go.
Portable stove, cookware, water purifier or filter– If you’re going out for multi-day trips, plan ahead and make sure you have what you need, including storage to keep your food away from wildlife and keep yourself safe.
Comfort and Relaxation
Portable camping chair – If you plan to make frequent stops and boulders aren’t your thing, bring along a more comfortable option. There are many to choose from and our local outfitters like Sportsman Ski Haus will have some options in Whitefish or their bigger Kalispell location.
Books or e-reader – When you want to just enjoy the sun and mountain breezes and read the latest best seller, don’t forget your reading material. One tip, ride up to the top of Big Mountain and enjoy the deck view at the Summit House at 6800′ up. it’s a great place to sit back and enjoy a good book or great conversation.
Journal and pen – If you want to write your thoughts, and memories or make notes for any of our units with hiking journals, don’t forget your journal.
Portable charger for electronic devices
Entertainment and Activities
Binoculars for wildlife watching – not all our units have these so please bring some if you want to take in wildlife at a safe distance.
Fishing gear (if applicable) – we have many outfitters who can help get you set up if you want to enjoy the area lakes.
Playing cards or board games – some of our units have games to enjoy too. Teryn can help answer these questions too or bring your favorite travel sized game. We do have some unique stores with fun games too. Be sure to check out Imagination Station in Downtown Whitefish.
Sketchbook and art supplies – bring out your creative side!
Personal Care Items
Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, etc.) – our units have the basics of soap, shampoo and conditioner. Don’t forget, you’ll need your amenities for good dental hygiene
Medications and prescriptions – Yes, we do have pharmacies here. Walgreens and Safeway are both in Whitefish so, if you need any prescriptions filled while you’re here, you will have options.
Insect repellent – you won’t need them going out to dinner or just having fun on the mountain. But, you will if you’re heading into Glacier for hiking or biking.
Lip balm and moisturizer – it is drier here so you’ll need this!
Hand sanitizer – it’s just good basic sense these days.
Safety Essentials
First aid kit – we have these in our West Glacier vacation properties.
Bear spray – our properties all have these available for our guests. Do NOT test them! Use them only when you need to. But, please read the directions so you know how to use them in the event of a bear encounter.
Personal identification and emergency contact information – This is always good information to have when you’re traveling.
Miscellaneous Items
Cash and credit cards – We have one of a kind shops and an incredible amount of exceptional restaurants (see our Restaurants Guide Blog)
Reusable shopping bags – our shops carry some great ones so if you didn’t bring one, it’s a great time to get one and use it when you return home too.
